On Wednesday morning at approximately 8:15 a.m. EST, there was an incident involving multiple dorms at Gulf Correctional Institution Annex. Due to the quick and effective response of institutional staff and special response teams, the situation was quickly brought under control and resolved within a half hour.
Secretary Julie Jones: “The officers at Gulf Annex showed remarkable courage and bravery today as they rapidly brought the situation under control and restored the facility to safe operation. I am proud of the work they did today and their unwavering commitment to public safety.”
A total of seven officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the event. Injured individuals have received medical treatment. (The Department previously reported six injured officers, however an additional officer involved reported a minor injury.)
A thorough investigation into this event will be conducted and all individuals found to be involved will be held fully accountable.
