Inmate Assaults Correctional Officers at Sumter Correctional Institution
BUSHNELL, Fla. — An inmate attacked correctional officers Thursday afternoon at Sumter Correctional Institution.
Inmate Shaine Roberts (D35915) attacked three correctional officers at approximately 1:20 p.m. Inmate Roberts was causing a disturbance when staff ordered the inmate to cease his actions. The inmate struck an officer in the face and continued to attack them. Following the initial attack, the officers were able to successfully bring inmate Roberts into compliance.
The injured officers were examined by medical staff who noted one officer had a scrape located on the left elbow, another officer had swelling on his left eye, and the third officer had scratches to his arm and a head contusion.
Inmate Roberts will receive a disciplinary report for this assault. The Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General will investigate this incident.
An Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.
