OCALA, Fla. – An inmate assaulted a correctional officer Monday morning at Marion Correctional Institution.

Inmate Michael Mitchell (967740) attacked a correctional officer at approximately 11:00 a.m. While conducting searches, staff noticed inmate Mitchell running away from the area. Staff attempted to intervene, but inmate Mitchell knocked an officer to the ground and elbowed the same officer in the head. Inmate Mitchell then elbowed another responding officer in the head. The stricken officers were then able to successfully apply restraints to inmate Mitchell and bring him into compliance.

The injured officers were examined by medical staff who noted a bump to one head, abrasions to one hip, abrasions to one arm and abrasions above one ear.

Inmate Mitchell will receive a disciplinary report for this assault. The Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General will investigate this incident.
