Inmate Attacks Correctional Officer at Okeechobee Correctional Institution

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. – An inmate attacked a correctional officer Friday afternoon at Okeechobee Correctional Institution.

Inmate Wakim Stewart (Y52972) attacked two correctional officers at approximately 2:15 p.m. Upon the discovery of contraband in his bunk during a routine search, Inmate Stewart grabbed a correctional officer and pushed her up against a wall. When a second officer attempted to restrain inmate Stewart, he pushed her up against the wall as well. A third correctional officer then managed to apply wrist restraints, at which point inmate Stewart became compliant.

The injured officers were examined by medical staff who noted pain and bruising to their arms.

Inmate Stewart will receive a disciplinary report for this assault. The Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General will investigate this incident.

An Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.

As Florida's largest state agency, the Department of Corrections employs 24,000 members statewide, incarcerates approximately 98,000 inmates and supervises nearly 140,000 offenders in the community.
