Inmate Assaults Correctional Officer at Union Correctional Institution
RAIFORD, Fla. – An inmate assaulted a correctional officer Wednesday evening at Union Correctional Institution (UCI).
Inmate James Shawn (N13946) assaulted a correctional officer at approximately 10:19 p.m. while being moved from his cell. Inmate Shawn, who had become combative following verbal counseling, struck the staff member in the face while being restrained. After being properly restrained and escorted to a shower cell, inmate Shawn once again became combative, spitting on staff and striking another officer in the face. Officers then brought the inmate into compliance.
The involved staff members were examined by medical staff who noted that one correctional officer sustained a bloody nose.
Inmate Shawn will receive a disciplinary report for this assault. The Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General will investigate this incident.
An Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.
