Inmate Attacks Correctional Officers at Charlotte Correctional Institution
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – An inmate attacked two correctional officers Tuesday afternoon at Charlotte Correctional Institution (CCI).
Inmate Shawn Phillips (J21132) attacked a correctional officer at approximately 1:03 p.m. while creating a disturbance. Inmate Phillips, who was in a shower cell, reached through the bars and struck the staff member in the face. Upon returning to his cell following the shower, inmate Phillips slipped his hand restraints and struck another correctional officer in the face. Three officers then subdued the inmate and securely applied hand restraints.
The involved staff members were examined by medical staff who noted swelling in the one of the officers’ eyes.
Inmate Phillips will receive a disciplinary report for this assault. The Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General will investigate this incident.
An Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.
