Inmate Attacks Correctional Officers at RMC

Lake Butler, Fla. – An inmate attacked two correctional officers Thursday morning at the Reception and Medical Center (RMC).

Inmate Jamal Blakely (C09701) attacked a correctional officer at approximately 8:55 a.m. The officer was counseling with inmate Blakely when the inmate swung and struck the officer in the face knocking him to the floor. A second officer observed the battery from the officer station and attempted to exit the officer station when the inmate pushed him backwards into the officer station against the railing, striking him repeatedly.

Additional staff arrived and subdued the inmate. Both officers were examined by medical staff who suggested that the officers receive treatment at an outside medical facility for various injuries including abrasions, bruising, swelling and scratches.

Inmate Blakely will receive a disciplinary report for this assault. The Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General will investigate this incident.

An Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.

As Florida's largest state agency, the Department of Corrections employs 24,000 members statewide, incarcerates more than 98,000 inmates and supervises nearly 140,000 offenders in the community.
