Martin Correctional Institution Inmate Veterans Program Honors Korean War Veteran

TALLAHASSEE– The Inmate Veteran Program at Martin Correctional Institution today honored Walter J. Thomas, retired Staff Sergeant with the United States Air Force. The Inmate Veteran Honor Guard will present Mr. Thomas with flags from the veteran program.

Mr. Thomas is a veteran of the Korean War and the father of inmate Rodger Thomas who is a current member of the Sons of the American Legion at Martin Correctional Institution. During his service, Mr. Thomas received the Air Force Longevity Service Award and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.

The Veteran Dorm Program was established in 2011 to provide specialized services to verified military service inmates. Currently, the Department has five veterans dorm programs housed at Santa Rosa-Annex, Gulf- Annex; Sumter Correctional Institution, Union Correctional Institution and Martin Correctional Institution.


As Florida's largest state agency, the Department of Corrections employs more than 22,000 members statewide, incarcerates more than 100,000 inmates and supervises nearly 146,000 offenders in the community.
