FDC Invites Media to Polk CI’s Toys for Tots Program
Media members will meet Polk County program coordinator, program participants and tour the workshop inside Polk CI

POLK CITY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is pleased to invite media to visit Polk Correctional Institution’s Toys for Tots program workshop area. Program coordinator Dave Waller and program participants will be present to provide information and a tour of the workshop, paint area and warehouse.

WHAT: This program operates in partnership with the Polk County Chapter of Marine Toys for Tots in a decorated and lively woodworking shop within the correctional institution. The material used in the production of toys is provided on a donation basis. The wooden products manufactured and decorated by the inmates consist of typical play toys such as rocking horses, play strollers and wooden frame paintings. Each year before Christmas, the toys are transported from the correctional institution to a nearby warehouse and prepared for delivery. Around 500-600 toys are made each year for donation.

WHY: Inmate participation in vocational programs such as woodworking decreases idleness while increasing employability skills upon release. This particular program also provides FDC and the program participants an opportunity to participate in the broader mission of the Marines Toys for Tots program by supplying authentic hand-made wooden toys.

WHEN: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 *RSVP required in advance

WHERE: Polk Correctional Institution 10800 Evans Road Polk City, Florida 33868-6925

CONTACT: For more information or to RSVP for the event, please contact the FDC Communications Office at 850-488-0420 or email PublicAffairs@FDC.MyFlorida.com today!
