FDC Sends Condolences to Family, Friends of Colonel Matthew Sanders

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) offers our sincere condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Matthew Sanders, who was injured in the line of duty, and passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. Mr. Sanders served the state of Florida as a correctional employee for decades. His most recent role was Captain at Graceville Correctional Facility.

“Anytime a correctional officer is killed in the line of duty, it is a harrowing reminder of the grave danger each of our officer’s walk into each day to carry out our mission,” said Secretary Mark Inch. “We offer our prayers and sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those who were fortunate enough to serve alongside Mr. Sanders throughout his career.”

Prior to his role as Captain at Graceville CF, Mr. Sanders retired as a Colonel from FDC in 2007 after serving the Department in various capacities for 19 years. Many current and former FDC members have fond memories of working alongside Mr. Sanders and remember his dedication to his career and serving alongside his co-workers.
